Recap

North Monastery from Cork triumphed in the 1980-81 Boys U-17 Munster Schools Basketball Association Blitz, defeating Douglas A, also from Cork convincingly, 39-19 in the Pool A Final. The Six Cork Schools had been seeded into Pool A, with the First Round featuring three matches between the six schools, the winners moving on to the Pool A Semi-Finals and Final, and the runners-up going on to the Pool B Semi-Finals and Final.

Rockwell College from Tipperary South were seeded into Pool B, where they met the runners-up of the Douglas A versus Douglas B First Round match (won 28-14 by Douglas A). After defeating Douglas B in the Second Round, Rockwell College proceeded to the Pool B Final where they met Dunmanway who had triumphed after two periods of overtime versus Coláiste Chríost Rí from Cork City. Again Rockwell College won, defeating Dunmanway 28-26 in the Pool B Final, necessitating a playoff between the five Pool B Schools the following weekend to determine the B Championship winners.

The Pool A Championship was more straight-forward: The six Cork Schools were drawn against each other in the First Round where along with Douglas A’s triumph over Douglas B, Coláiste Íosagáin Ballvourney from the West Muskerry Gaeltacht defeated Dunmanway 27-19, and North Monastery won 43-14 versus Coláiste Chríost Rí. Douglas A then received a bye into the Pool A Final where they met North Monastery who were victorious by a 38-22 scoreline over Coláiste Íosagáin Ballvourney. In the Final North Monastery triumphed 39-19 over Douglas A which qualified them for the All-Ireland Semi-Finals. [References: 1]

About Basketball Ireland

Basketball Ireland (then known as the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland) was founded in 1947, playing a Club and County model like the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) before making the change over to a National League based on clubs in the mid-1970s with the National Basketball Cup, a kind of Champions League in four groups of four and Semi-Finals and Finals for the winners of the Area Boards an interim competition between the two in the late 1960s to early 1970s.

Report

Western Command were the leading team in the Defense Forces Inter-Command Basketball Championships from 1928 to 1986. With Basketball first being played in Ireland in the Army Barracks as these were the only places with Gyms before the end of World War II, it was the Defense Forces that dominated the early Basketball scene in Ireland. After the foundation of the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (now Basketball ireland) in 1947, the Defense Forces continued to play alongside civilian teams in the All-Ireland Club Championships and Blitzes. With the foundation of the first civilian Basketball teams (Neptune in Cork – still in existence) and the Weevils (named after a bug that eat the corn in the Defense Forces supplies), the focus shifted away from the Defense Forces to the population at large.

The earliest Defense Forces Basketball Championships were thus the equivalent of the All-Ireland Basketball Championships up until after World War II. The first two winners were the 5th Brigade (1928) and 6th Brigade (1929), and from then until the outbreak of the war (“The Emergency” as WWII was known as in Ireland), Battalions dominated, with the 5th winning six Championships, and the 4th and 3rd two each, along with one for the School of Music.

From 1941 onwards the Commands took over, with the Western Command being the best overall during the Cold War era, with the Republic of Ireland again being neutral like in WWII. The Western Command picked up 20 Championships from then until 1986, with nine runners-up spots, and the majority of the players on the 1948 Olympic Basketball team, until very recently the only team event where Ireland had competed in the Olympic Games.

Eastern Command took second in this table with 10 wins and six runners-up places, and coming on strongly in later years were the Air Corps with 6 Championships and 9 runners-up spots.
