Report

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland relented on its no paid professionals rule after St. Vincent’s of Killarney brought in two professionals from the United States in 1979. Seeing how many fans it was bringing in the Association legalised the import of paid players from USA, and changed its name to the Irish Basketball Association to reflect this change in 1980.

St. Vincent’s Killarney would run away with the League and Top Four Championships that year, and the following year the other clubs followed suit by bringing in players from the United States.

Blue Demons of Cork would win the League in 1980-81, as Munster Clubs dominated the League over the next decade. Gleneagle Killarney would win the League the following year and from 1982 to 1991 the great Neptune team of the era would win seven out of nine league titles – only Blue Demons interrupting this streak in 1983-84 and 1988-89.

St. Vincent’s of Glasnevin in Dublin were the only team to break this Cork and Kerry stranglehold by winning the Top four Championship in 1982-83, 1983-84, 1985-86 and 1989-90, but the League would belong to Cork and Kerry.

In 1991 the League made the decision to cut the number of imports a team was allowed to bring in from two to one and merged the two Divisions into one Super League. It was thought Irish players were able to make the step up to Pro but the fans lost interest with only one American and the Golden Era was over.

Report

Basketball Ireland rebranded the Super League as the Premier League in 2013, however, Division 1 remained the same.

In 2013-14 Maree won the League Title, and in 2014-15, another Galway team, Moycullen won the Division 1 title. The top two played in the Premier League playoffs this year (named the Champions Trophy), whilst those ranked 3-6 played in the Division 1 Playoffs along with four lower-ranked Premier League sides, one of which, DCU Saints won the Playoff title (named the League Cup).

At the end of the 2015-16 season, Maree, back in Division after being relegated from the Premier League, won the League title but fell in the League Cup (Playoff) Final, 89-79 to Kubs of Kilbarrack in Dublin.

For the following season Division 1 was split into Northern and Southern Conferences, with Maree and Neptune of Cork winning their respective conferences, and Maree the overall League. In The League Cup Playoffs, Killorglin of Kerry shocked both Maree and, in the Final, Neptune, winning 97-72.

The League was again split into Northern & Southern Conferences for the 2017-18 season, with the League split into a Top Half (Division 1A) and Bottom Half (Division 1B) for the second half of the season. Killorglin won the League title, but IT Carlow were to be the Playoff champions, winning the League Cup 88-72 against Dublin Lions of Clondalkin.

In 2018-19, a whopping 17 teams played in Division 1, with teams playing each other twice within their own conference, and once against teams from the other conference for a marathon 23 or 24 game season. DBS Eanna of Ballyroan in Dublin, and Ballincollig, from Cork, won their respective Conferences, before DBS Eanna went on to win the Playoff Final, 73-67 against Dublin Lions.

Report

Basketball Ireland rebranded the Super League as the Premier League in 2013, but Division 1 remained the same.

In 2013-14 Portlaoise Panthers won the Division 1 title, but lost the Playoff Final to Tralee Imperials 51-33. The following year saw a repeat of the previous year for Portlaoise, again winning the League title, this time undefeated, but again going down in the Playoff Final, losing this time 63-59 to Oblate Dynamoes of Dublin. They were, however, promoted to the Premier League.

In 2015-16, NUI Galway Mystics completed the League and Playoff double, winning 79-61 in the Final against Fr. Mathews of Cork. Again the League champions failed in the Playoff Final in 2016-17, as IT Carlow lost out to neighbours Marble City Hawks of Kilkenny, 55-47, but were promoted.

In 2017-18, Marble City Hawks continued the pattern of League winners failing in the Playoff Final, as they lost to Fr. Mathews 48-43. For 2018-19 the Division was split into Northern and Southern Conferences, with Conference champions, Maree of Galway and Ulster University Elks, successfully negotiating the Playoffs and meeting in the Final, which was won by Maree, 73-65.

The Super League brand was re-introduced in 2016-17, with Templeogue winning the League title, but losing out in overtime 74-73 to Tralee Warriors in the Champions Trophy Playoff Final. Tralee Warriors repeated the feat the following year, again defeating Templeogue in the Final, after UCD Marian won the League.

Templeogue finally won the Playoff title in 2018-19, beating  Belfast Star 77-62 in the Champions Trophy Final, after Tralee Warriors had won the League.
