The National Basketball League was again split into two levels in 1993, with St. Vincent’s winning at their third attempt in 1993-94, defeating Garvey’s Tigers Tralee 82-75 in the Final. The Dublin club would win again the following year 103-88 against Notre Dame.

St. Vincent’s  would be in the Final for the fifth year running in 1994-95 losing to Belfast’s Star of the Sea 106-83. This would start a run of four wins in a row for the Belfast side, defeating St. Vincent’s Glasnevin 106-83 in 1995-96 and Neptune of Cork 90-85 in 1996-97. They would top this off with another Final victory in 1997-98, 92-74 against Notre Dame, another agonising defeat for the Firhouse club based in the National Basketball arena in Tallaght.

St. Vincent’s Glasnevin would again take the honours in 1998-99, defeating fellow Dubliners Killester 86-78 in the Final. That season would see the Super League and Division 1 merged yet again after being split into two levels since 1993. The 1999-2000 season would finally see another Dublin team, Notre Dame make the breakthrough, beating St. Vincent’s 93-74.

The 2000-01 season would be cut short due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth-disease and the title would be awarded to Killester who were ahead on points. They would lose the Final the following year 78-69 to Tralee Tigers, a Kerry team finally winning the title after a long absence from the winners roll for the county. St. Vincent’s, now known as Saints would again be the winners in the 2002-03 season, beating Dublin rivals  Notre Dame 115-84 in the Final.

This would be the end of another era as the Association changed its name to Basketball Ireland in 2003, and reverted to a two-division format, with the both the Super League and Division 1 divided into Northern and Southern Conferences.

Report

The Ladies National Basketball League was given a slight name-change in 1991 to the Women’s Basketball League. The new decade brought plenty of success for Naomh Mhuire (Inchicore, Dublin), Meteors (Stillorgan, Dublin), Lee Strand Tralee (Kerry), and new team to the ranks of the Champions, Snowcream Wildcats from Waterford.

Lee Strand Tralee caused a shock in both the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons, winning the Top Fours, after Naomh Mhuire and Meteors had dueled it out for the League title (both finishing on equal won-loss records at the top both seasons).

Naomh Mhuire won the League title in 1994-95, but Snowcream Wilcats won the Top fours, and the pattern of the League winners losing out in the Top Fours continued the next year, as Wildcats won the League with a 13-1 record, but lost to Meteors in the Final. The pattern was again repeated in the 1996-97 season as Wildcats again won the League title but lost the Top Four Final to Naomh Mhuire.

Following the 1996-97 season, the Women’s Divisions 1 and 2 were merged into one 9-team Super League.

Report

In 1991 the Irish Basketball Association decided to merge Divisions 1 and 2 in the Men’s National League and drop the numbers of paid imports from two to one, thinking the Irish players were up to playing at the same level as the American imports.

Ballina made up for earlier disappointments winning the first National Basketball League title beating St. Vincent’s Glasnevin  91-78 in the Playoff Final. St. Vincent’s were again the runners-up the following year, losing 79-62 to North Monastery in the Final.

Following this the League was again split into two levels – the Super League and Division 1
