Basketball Ireland Men’s Division 1 Conferences 2020-21 [Ref: 3]

Report

The Basketball Ireland Men’s National League Conferences were announced on 7th July 2020. The National Leagues will be returning to a North and South Conference system, not used in the Super League since the 2011-12 season.

Division 1 consists of 16 teams, divided equally into North and South Conferences. Division 1 North consists of Ulster University and Letterkenny IT from Ulster, Sligo All-Stars and Titans (Galway) from Connacht, Drogheda Wolves from Louth and Malahide, Tolka Rovers and Dublin Lions (Clondalkin) from Dublin.

Division 1 South includes St. Paul’s and Team Kerry (both Killarney, Kerry), Limerick Celtics and UL Eagles from Limerick, Fr. Mathews from Cork, and Waterford IT, all from Munster. Two South Leinster teams complete the line-up: Portlaoise Panthers (Laois) and IT Carlow.

In all there are four new teams completing a 28-team National League: Team Kerry, Drogheda Wolves, Malahide and Titans, with Titans returning after a years absence.

Basketball Ireland continued with the two Conference system for the National League Women’s Division 1 (Level 2) for the 2020-21 season, with five teams in the North Conference and six in the South.

Division 1 North consists of newcomers LYIT Donegal (Letterkenny IT), alongside Belfast Phoenix Rockets, Swords Thunder, Griffith College Templeogue, and Ulster University.

Division 1 South contains two Limerick sides, Limerick Celtics and UL Huskies, NUIG Mystics from Galway, Portlaoise Panthers (Laois), Tipperary Knights and Kerry side St. Paul’s Killarney.

Teams are to play each team in their own Conference twice and teams in the other Conference once, meaning a 15-game schedule in the North Conference and 16-game schedule in the South Conference.

The top three teams in each Conference qualify for the playoffs, with each of the Conference winners seeded directly into the Semi-Finals.

Basketball Ireland introduced a Conference system for the National League women’s Super League for the first time for the 2020-21 season, with 12 teams in total divided into two conferences, North and South.

The North conference features three Dublin teams: Champions DCU Mercy, Pyrobel Killester and Trinity Meteors, as well as IT Carlow, Leixlip Amenities Liffey Celtics (Kildare) and Maree fro Galway.

The South Conference features three Cork sides: Ambassador UCC Glanmire, Fr. Mathews and Singleton SuperValu Brunell, as well as Kerry team St. Mary’s Castleisland, Marble City Hawks from Kilkenny and Waterford Wildcats.

The Basketball Ireland Men’s National League Conferences were announced on 7th July 2020. The National Leagues will be returning to a North and South Conference system, not used in the Super League since the 2011-12 season.

Ballincollig were promoted to the Men’s Super League and will take part in the South Conference alongside fellow Cork side Neptune, Kerry clubs KCYMS and Tralee Warriors and two Galway teams, Maree and Moycullen.

Super League North Conference consists of another six teams: Belfast Star and five Dublin teams: Eanna (Ballyroan), Templeogue, UCD Marian from the Southside and Killester and DCU Saints from the Northside.

Division consists of 16 teams, also divided equally into North and South Conferences. Division 1 North consists of Ulster University and Letterkenny IT from Ulster, Sligo All-Stars and Titans (Galway) from Connacht, Drogheda Wolves from Louth and Malahide, Tolka Rovers and Dublin Lions (Clondalkin) from Dublin.

Report

The FIBA Europe Cup was a 2nd Division Men’s Club Basketball Competition in Europe that ran from 2006 to 2017. Basketball Ireland entered a representative team from the National Leagues, including both Irish and Non-National players, called Hibernia.

Hibernia lost all six Group F matches against Bakken Bears (Denmark), CEZ Nymburk (Czech Republic) and Tajfun Celje (Slovenia).

St. Marys Castleisland A and TK Cougars finished joint top of the Kerry Area Basketball Board Ladies Division 1 in 2015-16 on 8-2 Wins-Losses Records. St. Marys A were placed first in the Standings, which may have been due to head-to-head Points Difference (69-61 & 54-55) versus TK Cougars, or it may have been due to alphabetical order.

St. Marys B and Tralee Imperials finished mid-table on 5-5 Records in the six team Division.

The Kerry Area Basketball Board Men’s Cross Division was a round-robin series of Division 2 versus Division 3 matches. St. Mary’s from Castleisland came out on top, with a 4-0 Wins-Losses Record, with Division 3 teams St. Josephs from Duagh and Glenbeigh both going 2-1 after losing to St. Mary’s and triumphing over both the other two Division 2 teams.

In terms of an Overall Division 2 / Division 3 Standings, St. Mary’s Castleisland finished with the best record in Division 2 and also Overall with an 8-0 record. St. Josephs Duagh were the best Division 3 team with an 8-1 Overall Record.
