Report

Javan Dupree led Star of the Sea of Belfast to their first ever Irish Basketball Association Men’s Super League National Championship in 1997-98, running up a 17-1 regular season record (their only loss was a 93-84 loss to Denny Notre Dame in Week 6, which put the Tallaght side on top of the table on 6-0). After going 9-0 in the first half Denny faltered over Christmas and New Year’s, with back to back losses to Kerry Spring Water Killarney and Killester. Notre Dame stuck with Star through Week 14, just a game behind the Belfast side going into the big clash between the two in Week 15, which Star won 100-83 with 29 points by C Guitlar, 24 by G Maguire and 19 by Adrian Fulton. Another loss the following week for Denny meant the League title was wrapped up by Star in Week 16, and they went on to win the National Championships with a 92-74 victory over their nearest challengers on March 15th, Gareth Maguire scoring 23, C Guitlar 20 and John Leahy 18. Denny’s Americans, Randall Mounts (27) and Lennie McMillan were unable to stop them.

Report

St. Vincent’s secured victory in 1997-98, 92-74 against Notre Dame, another agonising defeat for the Firhouse club based in the National Basketball arena in Tallaght.

By the end of October 1997, Denny Notre Dame from Firhouse, Tallaght and Star of the Sea from Belfast were undefeated with four wins apiece. Dungannon were the surprise packet on 3 wins and one loss in third. Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s and Longnecks Ballina, for so long the two favourites in the 1990s, were a game further back in fourth.

By November’s end, Denny Notre Dame were still undefeated on 8 wins, Lenny McMillian sparking them to the top of the table, one game ahead of Star of the Sea, with Dungannon two games further back. Three teams were tied for fourth place on four wins: Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s, Longnecks Ballina and Killester. at the other end of the table, Neptune, for so long a Cork success-story were languishing on 7 losses from 7 games with one game postponed, two games behind Garvey’s Tigers Tralee and Kerry Spring Water Killarney, the Kerry teams also struggling of late.

Denny Notre Dame and Star of the Sea were battling it out for top spot with 9 wins each from 10 games at the end of December, three ahead of Dugannon, while Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s took up fourth spot with 5 wins. There wasa log-jam of four teams on four wins in fifth: Longnecks Ballina, Killester, Kerry Spring Water Killarney and UCD Marian, with even Garveys Tigers Tralee still in contention for a Playoff spot with 3 wins and a game in hand. Neptune were the only team which could be counted out with only one victory to their credit.

By the last league weekend of January, just before Sprite Cup Final Weekend, Star of the Sea had moved into sole position at the top with 12 wins and one loss, Denny Notre Dame in second with 11 wins and 2 losses after their loss to Killester in Week 11, which moved Killester into sole ownership of third on 7-6. Three teams were in fourth on 6-7: Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s, Longnecks Ballina and Dungannon.

At the end of the season it was Star of the Sea who pulled away, victory over Denny Notre Dame in Week 15 starting a string of three losses in a row for the Firhouse, Tallaght team as the Belfast side finished on 17-1 with Denny finishing on 13-5, four games behind. A further three back were Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s and Killester, who also qualified for the Top Four Playoffs. Dungannon’s late slide meant they finished on 9-9 in fifth place, followed by Longnecks Ballina (8-10), UCD Marian (7-11) and Kerry Spring Watter Killarney (6-12). The bottom two spots, on 5-13 went to Neptune and Garveys Tigers Tralee.

The National Championships, in the National Basketball Arena, saw Star of the Sea win 92-74 in the Final against Denny Notre Dame, denying the Tallaght side the Championship and Cup Double, and securing the League and Championship Double for the Belfast team. Star had disposed of Killester in the Semi-Finals, 94-72, while Denny Notre Dame had won 97-70 over Marathon Sports St. Vincent’s in the other Semi-Final.

About

The Basketball Ireland National League Men’s Division 1 was the second level of Men’s Basketball in Ireland in 2015-16, featuring 10 teams, playing a balanced 18-game home & away schedule.

This was two teams more than in 2014-15, with Eanna BC (Ballyroan, Dublin 14) and SSE Airtricity Moycullen having been promoted from Division 1 after the 2014-15 season, and Neptune having been relegated from the Premier League. Dublin Inter had dropped out of the League having played in the Premier League in 2014-15.

Tolka Rovers had dropped back down to the Area Boards from Division 1 for 2015-16 and they were replaced by four teams from the Area Boards: Kestels (Portlaoise – Midlands ABB), IT Carlow Basketball (Midlands ABB), KUBS (Kilbarrack – Dublin MBB), and Killorglin (Kerry ABB). Report

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland instituted the Top Four Playoffs in 1977-78. Marian and Blue Demons were the first two winners. In 1979-80 the name of the organization was changed to the Irish Basketball Association (IBBA) to reflect the new paid imports from America. Between then an 1991 St. Vincent’s (Gleneagle) Killarney won it twice, St. Vincent’s (Jameson) Dublin four times, Blue Demons (Team Britvic) from Cork three times, and Neptune (Burgerland), also from Cork, three times.

In 1991-92 the two Men’s Divisions were merged into one Budweiser National League, won by Ballina (Connacht Gold) from Co. Mayo in 1991-92 and North Monastery 96ers, from Cork in 1992-93. The League was again split into two divisions in 1993-94 with the top division renamed the Men’s Super League.

From 1993-94 to 2002-03 the National Championship was won on four occasions by St. Vincent’s Dublin (Saints), Star of the Sea (Belfast) on three occasions and Notre Dame (Tallaght) and Tralee Tigers on one occasion each.

The Association rebranded as Basketball Ireland in 2003 and the two Conference (North and South) system was re-introduced (as in 1991 to 1993). The Super League Playoff Final was won three times between then and 2013 by both UCC Demons (Blue Demons merged with UCC) and DART Killester. Tralee Tigers won it twice and St. Vincent’s Dublin and UL eagles once.

In 2013-14 the Super League was renamed the Premier League for three seasons before reverting to the Super League name, and the National Championship renamed the Champions Trophy. It was won on three occasions by UCC Demons, twice by Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and once by Templeogue BC between 2013-14 and the present.

Report

The 1996-97 Irish Basketball Association National Basketball League Men’s Super League turned out to be season-long duel between Neptune, from Cork, and Star of the Sea, from Belfast. By the beginning of December the two teams had stretched their lead from the chasing pack, and in a showdown on Sunday, the 9th February, Neptune held on to beat Star 82-80, with the teams neck-and-neck until the final 3 minutes, when their stars, led by Terry Strickland, put up 10 unanswered points, to lead 82-76. Late Star baskets were not enough, and Neptune held their advantage until the end of the season, winning 17 of 18 games, to finish four points ahead of Star of the Sea in the Final Standings.

Star of the Sea got their revenge in the Top 4 Playoffs, however, as the two teams met in the Final, Star winning the rematch 90-85 after dispatching St. Vincent’s of Glasnevin in Dublin 101-76 in the Semi-Final. In the other Semi-Final, Neptune had a tougher match against Denny Notre Dame, prevailing 98-96.
