Report

_________________________________________________________

The Irish Basketball Association rebranded the Ladies National Basketball League as the Women’s National League in 1991. Division 2 was the Second Tier.

Drimnagh Dynamoes would win the Division in 1991-92 on a 10-4 record, but lose the Final 62-44 to Snowcream Wexford. The following year Killester would top the league on 10-2 and defeat Carrick-on-Shannon, by two points 59-57 in the Final.

Snowcream Wexford would be back in Division 2 after one season in Division 1 and would win the title with 13 wins from 14 matches. The 1994-95 season would see a drop in the number of teams to five as Brunell of Cork  took the title with a 9-3 record. MSB wouuld take the title in 1995-96 with a 9-3 record and defeat Eagles of Kildare 74-61 in the Final.

Following the 1996-97 season which was won by Blarney with an unblemished 12-0 record, though they lost the Final to Killester in Overtime, 79-75, it was decided to merge Divisions 1 & 2 into one Super League, with a Regional League below this.

[28]

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland was created in 1945, and in 1971 set up the National League. the modern era began in 1980 when the ABAI changed its name to the Irish Basketball Association (IBBA) and sanctioned the introduction of paid professional imports from America. In 1991 the First and Second Divisions were merged into One Division with two conferences, which in 1993 were split again into a Super League (First Level) and Division 1 (Second Level). They were again merged in 1998 and split once again in 2001. The Association rebranded in 2003 as Basketball Ireland and in 2013 the Super League was rebranded the Premier League for three seasons, reverting back to the name Super League in 2016. [29]

This document provides an Overview of the Super League of the Basketball Ireland Men’s National League from 2003 to 2013, which was First Level of Men’s Basketball in Ireland, and was a period when the League reverted to a Two Conference format, with each team playing Home & Away against teams in their own conference, and once against teams in the other conference, following which a series of Playoffs decided the National Champions.

In 2013, with revelations that Basketball Ireland was €1.4 Million in debt following the economic collapse in Ireland at that time, it was decided that the League was in need of restructuring in order to fix it and a Single Division, playing Home & Way was again re-introduced, with the League Rebranded as the Premier League.

The Men’s Division 1 was the 2nd Level of the IBA National Basketball League from 1993-2003. There was automatic Promotion and Relegation to and from the Super League.

Delta Notre Dame of Firhouse, playing in the National Basketball Arena, won the Division in 1993-94 by one game from Dungannon of Tyrone. The following season Killarney and North Monastery 96ers of Cork finished tied at the top. Marian, from South-East Dublin, ran away with the title in 1995-96, winning all fourteen games, with Queen’s University in second. Sligo All-Stars won the Top four Playoffs.

Ballina (Mayo) and Dungannon finished tied at the top in 1996-97 with MSB of North Dublin winning the Playoffs. Sligo won the title in 1997-98 but lost the Playoff Final to Waterford.

The Second Level was merged with the Super League after the 1997-98 season and re-established in 2001. Ballina won the Playoff Final in 2001-02, and completed the double in 2002-03.

In 2003 The irish Basketball Association underwent a rebranding as Basketball Ireland.

Report

________________________________________________________

The Irish Basketball Association (IBBA) started the Ladies National Basketball League in 1979-80, and the Ladies Division 2 in 1982-83, with automatic Promotion and Relegation between them.

The 1982-83 season was won by Eagle Lodge of Tralee who went on to defeat Athlone 65-37 in the Top-Four Playoffs. Athlone would make up for the loss the following season winning Division 2 and beating St. Louis in the Top-Four Final by a score of 52-40. The 1984-85 season would see the start of the Killester Kittens long-term success, winning the Division and beating Burgerland Limerick 67-65 in the Top-Four Final.

Wildcats of Waterford would start their road to Super League success winning the double in 1985-86, with St. Louis losing another Top-Four Final, 53-47. Athlone, back in Division 2 for 1986-87, would play out a fantastic tussle all-season with Kildare’s Castledermot – the two would finish level on points at the top of the league, before Athlone would beat the Kildare team 46-44 in the Top-Four Final.

The 1987-88 season Finale would be won by Shannon 87-86 over a Killester team back in Division 2. Killester would lose out the following season also, 89-87 to Marathon. Tolka Rovers of Dublin would win the League in 1989-90, only to lose to Brunell, 68-63 in the Final. Corinthians would win the last League under the IBBA Ladies NBL name.

The League underwent rebranding in 1991 – The IBBA became the IBA and the Men’s Division 1 became a Super League. In the Ladies Leagues, the IBA changed the name of the competition to the Women’s National League Divisions 1 & 2, a Super League would be a further 6 years off for the Women.

Report

_________________________________________________________

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland was founded in 1947 and set up the first National League for men in 1971. In 1979 the League brought in professional players from America and the ABAI became the Irish Basketball Association and also started up the first Women’s League with a 1st and 2nd Division.

In 1997 the two Divisions were merged into one Women’s Super League, with a Regional League bbelow this, which in 2003 reverted back to two Divisions – Super League and Division 1 – with another rebranding of the Association to Basketball Ireland.

Wildcats of Waterford won the first Super League title in 1997-98 defeating Tolka Rovers 82-68 in the Final, and the following year they defeated  Killester 68-61, They completed a hat-trick of Super League titles in 1999-2000 winning against Dublin’s  Meteors 57-44. In the 2000-01 season they were awarded the title after the league was abandoned due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease as they were too far ahead to be caught by their nearest challengers.

The 2001-02 season saw the wildcats knocked off the top spot when Tolka Rovers finally won the title 66-59 in the Final against the University of Limerick. The students of Limerick, however, would come back stronger the following year and win the final 70-56 against St. Paul’s Killarney in an All-Munster Final.

This marked the end of an era as in 2003 the IBA rebranded as Basketball Ireland.
