Report

In a three-way race for the Women’s Irish Basketball Association National League Division 2 title, Drimnagh Dynamos, from Dublin, finished on a 10-4 record, a game ahead of Snowcream Wexford and Brunell. In the playoff for second place, Wexford prevailed, before taking the Final 62-44 against Drimnagh, with former county footballer, Eddie McMahon putting them in the history books as only the third team to ever to win the title in their debut year at the National League level, after Wildcats (Waterford) and Tralee. Trish Nolan (18 Pts) and Ann Forrestal O’Gorman (17 Pts) top scored for the women from the southeast, as they had a brilliant third quarter to pull away from the Dubliners, and win the Final, and promotion to Division 1.

Report

The Irish Basketball Association National League Women’s Division 1 (the top Division in Ireland) was sponsored by Citrus Spring for 1991-92. The League turned into an exciting four-team battle as West Coast Coolers Meteors (from Stillorgan in South Dublin), Naomh Mhuire (St. Mary’s, Inchicore, Dublin), Lee Strand Tralee (Co. Kerry) and Snowcream Wildcats (Waterford) only separated by one game at the end of the season.

Meteors won the title ahead of Naomh Mhuire, after both finished on 11-3 records, with Tralee and the Wildcats one game back on 10-4. Meteors weren’t to get the double, however, as Naomh Mhuire defeated them 59-48 in the Top 4 Final in Neptune Stadium, Cork. The team from Inchicore sprinted into an 11-point lead after 6 minutes, with Coolers switched to a man-to-man defense to claw back into the game, trailing 27-26 at the half. A low-scoring third quarter followed, with both sides level at the end 37-37, before good free-throwing in the last quarter from Naomh Mhuire and a three-point spree from Junior International June Blount secured the title for Naomh Mhuire.

Report

The 1996-97 Irish Basketball Association National Basketball League Men’s Super League turned out to be season-long duel between Neptune, from Cork, and Star of the Sea, from Belfast. By the beginning of December the two teams had stretched their lead from the chasing pack, and in a showdown on Sunday, the 9th February, Neptune held on to beat Star 82-80, with the teams neck-and-neck until the final 3 minutes, when their stars, led by Terry Strickland, put up 10 unanswered points, to lead 82-76. Late Star baskets were not enough, and Neptune held their advantage until the end of the season, winning 17 of 18 games, to finish four points ahead of Star of the Sea in the Final Standings.

Star of the Sea got their revenge in the Top 4 Playoffs, however, as the two teams met in the Final, Star winning the rematch 90-85 after dispatching St. Vincent’s of Glasnevin in Dublin 101-76 in the Semi-Final. In the other Semi-Final, Neptune had a tougher match against Denny Notre Dame, prevailing 98-96.

Report

The All-Ireland Minor Championships were won by Kilkenny from 1953 to 1955, before Antrim won three finals out of four from 1956 to 1959 (with Dublin breaking the sequence in 1957), Kerry then won the five-in-a-row from 1960 to 1964, before Dublin went on a winning streak from 1965 to 1968.

There were then two years of Kerry victories (1969 to 1970), before Dublin also won two in-in-a-row from 1971 to 1972, Cork took the 1973 title.
