About Basketball Ireland / Irish Basketball Association Cups

The Irish Basketball Association ran the National Cup for the Top Two Divisions as well as any regional teams that wished to enter in both Men’s and Women’s as well as Junior (Under 19) Cup for both Men and Women. The Cups were Knockout (single elimination) from the First Round. They were replaced by Super League and Division 1 Cups when the Association rebranded as Basketball Ireland in 2003. The Junior (U19) Cups were replaced by Under 20 and Under 18 Cups. Other Cups included the Irish Wheelchair Basketball Cup and introduced in the late 2010s the National Intermediate Cup Competition (Tier 3).

Report

Irish International, George Clarke, scored 39 of Collegians points, as he picked up the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1965 Lota Tournament, as the Belfast side triumphed by 22 points in the Final against hosts, Neptune. The Final score was 54-32 in favour of the Northerners.

The other Pool winners were St. Mary’s Athlone, winning their Pool on Points scored after all three teams had finished on one win apiece, and Gunners, from Cork. Neptune disposed of St. Mary’s in the first semi-Final, 32-26, and in the second, Collegians, likewise, won by six points, over Gunners, the final score being 24-18.

Collegians played a wide zone in the Final, and in an effort to combat this, Neptune drove forthe basket, only to see it swept from their fingertips, with a resulting fast break for the Northerners resulting in baskets. Player of the Tournament, George Clarke, not only scored 39 of his sides points but also always working, also making himself loose, leading from the break, and unselfishly making scoring passes time and again.

Report

Blue Demons were the first Cork side to win the Lota Tournament (hosted by Neptune) in 1968. They had won their Pool by defetaing St. Vincent’s Killarney, and the International invitee Llwynypia from Wales.

In the Semi-Finals they narrowly overcame Corinthians from Dublin, before some of the best basketball they had ever produced according to the reporter in the Evening echo, to triumph 37-26 over Ardglass from co. Down in the Final.

Report

Notre Dame are a Basketball team based in Firhouse, Dublin 24 (Co. South Dublin). the Men’s Team joined the Men’s Budweiser National League in 1993-94, playing in the new National Basketball arena, in nearby Tymon, Dublin 24. They were the Tallaght Area side in the Men’s League at the time and after being relegated to the new Division 1 for the 1994-95 season they were immediately promoted winning the Division with a 12-2 Wins-Losses record.

While they never won the Men’s Super League title they were the Cup specialists winning the Men’s National Cup four years in succession from 1996-97 to 1999-2000 defeating St Vincent’s 80-75 in 1996-97, Neptune 79-73 in 1997-98, Blue demons 82-61 in 1998-99 and then St. vincent’s again 69-67 in 1999-2000, while also winning the League Playoffs that year, doing the double over St. Vincent’s with a 93-74 victory.

in 2003 the Men’s Team was split from the Underage Teams, which continued to play in the Dublin Leagues, as the Team was taken over by Shamrock Rovers Football Club, which had aimed at the time to become more like a European multi-sports club. The team was renamed Shamrock Rovers HOOPS for the 2003-04 season.
