Report

Tolka Rovers won their first ever Irish Basketball Association Women’s Senior National Sprite Cup when defeating the heavily fancied Avonmore Snowcream Wildcats in their rookie Final. The Wildcats with only loss all season battled all the way against Tolka but a game high 15 points from MVP Rachel Kelly and 14 from Eimear Howard were just enough for the Northside Dubliners to beat the Waterford women. In an unpredictable finish, given both season form and the Wildcats being 13 points in front after a few minutes of the second half starting, Tolka managed to not only pull back the score but go ahead with a second Lorraine O’Brien three-pointer, and then pulled into a seven-point lead with three minutes remaining thanks to the excellent play of Sharon Kelly inside and another ‘three’ from Roisin Dixon. Wildcats managed to claw the score back to 58-59 with 23 seconds left after the brilliant Michelle Maguire but she missed the bonus and the game and the Cup went to Tolka Rovers for the first time ever.

Report

Denny Notre Dame wrote themselves into the Irish Basketball Association history books by becoming the first team to ever win the Men’s National (Sprite) Cup three times in a row. The local favourites defeated Esat Telecom Blue Demons 62-61 in the Final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, South Dublin with 19 points from Americans Anthony Jenkins, 14 from Calvin Morris and 13 from Lennie McMillan. Despite a huge 34 point haul from game MVP American Dion Wingfield and big three-pointers from Duvall Simmonds and Spanish Bosman-ruling player Paco de Benito, the Blue Demons, who had led 40-34 at the half were unable to resist the Notre Dame challenge after their other American Simmonds went on four fouls after seven minutes of the restart and spent six minutes on the bench allowing the Tallaght side to go six points clear. With Simmonds back in with seven minutes remaining and the help of three free throws from de Benito the Corkmen managed to pull the score back to two points, but a crucial three-pointer from Jenkins and four missed free throws from Blue Demons sealed the three-in-a-row for Denny Notre Dame.

Report

The Celtic Rugby Ltd-run Pro 14 Rainbow Cup 2021 was scheduled to include four South African Provinces in their absence at the Pro 14 League due to COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Restrictions. It kicked off on the Weekend of the 23rd to 25th April minus those four provinces.

Round 1 23-24 April 2021

Connacht, Munster, Dragons, Ospreys and Benetton all picked up bonus points wins in the opening round of the Rainbow Cup. Ulster picked up both a Try Bonus and a Losing Bonus in their 24-26 loss to Connacht, while Munster trounced Leinster 27-3. In Wales, Dragons defeated Scarlets 52-32 in the highest-scoring encounter of the weekend, while Ospreys defeated Cardiff Blues 36-14. In the Scottish-Italian matches, Benetton were surprisingly big winners over Glasgow Warriors, 46-19, while Edinburgh were made to work against Zebre, prevailing 24-18 in the end.

Round 2 7-9 May 2021

Benetton and Munster were the only two undefeated teams after Round 2 of the Guinness Pro 14 Rainbow Cup in 2021 after wins over Zebre (25-20) and Ulster (38-10). Climbing into first place in the Welsh part of the draw were Dragons with a huge 52-32 win over Cardiff Blues although all four teams in Wales were on 1 win and 1 loss following Ospreys victory at home to Scarlets. Dragons however had two bonus points. Rounding out the matches were Glasgow Warriors 29-19 versus Edinburgh and a big Leinster win at Connacht (50-21) as the West Ireland Province felt the backlash of the previous weeks loss to Munster where Leinster only scored three points.
