Report

Irish International, George Clarke, scored 39 of Collegians points, as he picked up the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1965 Lota Tournament, as the Belfast side triumphed by 22 points in the Final against hosts, Neptune. The Final score was 54-32 in favour of the Northerners.

The other Pool winners were St. Mary’s Athlone, winning their Pool on Points scored after all three teams had finished on one win apiece, and Gunners, from Cork. Neptune disposed of St. Mary’s in the first semi-Final, 32-26, and in the second, Collegians, likewise, won by six points, over Gunners, the final score being 24-18.

Collegians played a wide zone in the Final, and in an effort to combat this, Neptune drove forthe basket, only to see it swept from their fingertips, with a resulting fast break for the Northerners resulting in baskets. Player of the Tournament, George Clarke, not only scored 39 of his sides points but also always working, also making himself loose, leading from the break, and unselfishly making scoring passes time and again.
